Though VB is king but costly too. but there are lots of Open source Forum script available  like SMF,phpBB and more.

I had a forum and i used SMF on that.

VB is the best but it cost allot.. :) But within this two.. I rather choose.... PHPBB.. :) Its kinda cool and nice.. also do have different ready made themes... :)

In my opinion.. IPB is the best, however MYBB is SO much better than PhpBB3. Not only does it include more features, its more easy to use and configure. PHPBB3 is really a pain and the color scheme is ugly and sometimes difficult to modify. Recently I installed my own installation of MYBB and I can honestly say that I've never used a better FREE forum CMS. MyBB is awsome!

If I had to choose between the two I would choose MyBB in my opinion its the most profession free software out there and it has a great mod community.  ;D
